Queen Elizabeth I hawking, 1575, (1910). A 19th-century rendition from the Art of Falconrie by Turberville, (1585). The doublets have innumerable slashing, with the shirt protruding through the panes, and a small ruffle at the wrists. The doublet is tight-fitting with a crescent-shaped roll at the shoulder, and the front coming to a point. They were so hard-quilted, stuffed, bombasted and sewed that men could neither work nor yet play in them. The collar is high and close to the neck, and surmounted by a ruff. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910).
