Proclamation of the French Republic in Paris, 1870. On Sunday 4 September 1870, Léon Gambetta (1838-1882), member of the government of National Defence, proclaimed the French Third Republic in the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville in Paris, following the fall of the Second Empire after the defeat of Sedan, the capture of Napoleon III and the clamour of the Parisian people and the republicans.
