Pilgrim Fathers around a watch-fire, c1620 (c1880). Fleeing religious persecution in England, the Pilgrim Fathers established the second successful colony in North America. In 1620 they arrived in Massachusetts aboard the 'Mayflower', establishing the colony of New Plymouth, named after the port from which they sailed, leaving their old lives behind. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
