'Oliver Cromwell and his Troops at Dunbar Singing the 118th Psalm', 1926. Cromwell (1599-1658) commanded the forces of Parliament during the English Civil War. After the war England, Scotland and Ireland became a commonwealth. Cromwell was head of state as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth from 1653 until his death.
