Newark Castle and the River Trent, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, 1900. Newark Castle was built in the early 12th century by Bishop Alexander 'the Magnificent' of Lincoln. The town, which grew up around the castle, developed into an important centre of the wool and cloth trade with a large market.
