Nell Gwynn, 17th century, (1910). Portrait of King Charles II's mistress after Sir Peter Lely. The character of the dress of this period has taken on an unconfined ease, ringlets hang loosely on her exposed neck, the gown is strikingly simple: the sleeves are merely looped material covering the under-sleeves of lawn. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910).
