'Moses and the Brazen Serpent', c1808. God sent plague of serpents to punish the Israelites for their disobedience. They repented, asking Moses to intercede. God told him to make a brazen serpent and all those bitten could look upon it and recover. From the Bible (Numbers 21.5).
