Mercedes Streamliner car of Rudolf Caracciola in the Avusrennen race, Berlin, Germany, 1937. Both Mercedes and Auto-Union raced streamliner cars based on their speed record vehicles at Avus in 1937, registering lap speeds never since attained in a Formula race. Hermann Lang emerged as the winner of the race, watched by a crowd numbering 400,000. Having won his heat at the event, Caracciola had to retire from the final with gearbox trouble.
