London Wall, City of London, c1955. View of part of the area which was redeveloped. The rapid growth of car ownership in the 1950s and 60s created increasing anxiety around congestion and collision, leading to the widely accepted belief that people and cars should be segregated for the benefit of both. Pedestrians were separated from traffic by raised walkways known as Highwalks. Two of the developments which came out of this reorganization were the Barbican Estate and the Barbican Centre. View shows the ruins of the medieval tower of St Alphege London Wall, and the Midland Bank. The London Wall was a defensive wall first built by the Romans around the strategically important port town of Londinium in c200 CE, as well as the name of a modern street in the City of London.
