Liverpool Docks, c1955. The Port of Liverpool is a major port on the River Mersey. Liverpool developed into one of the principal ports of the British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries and became a major centre of transatlantic trade including the slave trade, migration, and passenger shipping. On the left is the cargo steamship SS Lokoja Palm, with Liverpool Cathedral in the distance.
