Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), American abolitionist and novelist, 1926. Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852) attacked the cruelty of slavery; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential, even in Britain. It made the political issues of the 1850s regarding slavery tangible to millions, energising anti-slavery forces in the North whilst embittering the South.. From "An Outline of Christianity, The Story of Our Civilisation", volume 5: "Christianity Today and Tomorrow", edited by RG Parsons and AS Peake, published by the Waverley Book Club (London, 1926).
