'Harlech Castle', 19th century. The construction of Harlech Castle, on a cliff overlooking Cardigan Bay in Wales, was begun by the English king Edward I in 1283. In 1463 it was the last stronghold to surrender to the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses (1453-1487), and in the English Civil War it was surrendered to the Parliamentary forces in 1647.
