Gur-e Amir, Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Gur-e Amir means "Tomb of the King". It was built in 1404 by order of Timur (Tamerlane) as the mausoleum of his grandson, Muhammad Sultan. After Timur died on campaign in 1405 he was buried in the Gur-e Amir as well. The mausoleum also houses the tombs of Timur's sons, Shah Rukh and Miran Shah and another grandson, Ulugh Beg.
