Fortress of Sedan, France, 1870. Sedan Castle Fort dates from the Middle Ages. On September 1, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, the Army of Chalons was defeated at the Battle of Sedan. Napoleon III surrendered the following day. From "Historia de la Guerra de Francia y Prusia" (History of the War between France and Prussia), Volume I, published in Barcelona, 1870.
