E. E. Cooper, 1902. 'Editor "The Colored American"; Founder of First Illustrated Negro Newspaper'. Edward Elder Cooper (1859-1908) was born into slavery in Florida, but became a prominent early African-American publisher in the United States, one of his titles being the "Indianapolis Freeman".
