'Donaldson's Hospital', mid-late 19th century. View of the hospital (later Donaldson's School) in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was founded in 1851 by Sir James Donaldson, a printer and newspaper publisher, to educate boys and girls from poor families, and applications on behalf of deaf children were encouraged. The building was designed by William Henry Playfair in an elaborate Gothic/Tudor style, built round a quadrangle with large corner towers. [J. Menzies, Edinburgh]
