'Christ in the Temple', 1879, (1914). 'The Twelve-Year-Old Jesus in the Temple', first exhibited in 1879, caused a scandal, with critics berating Liebermann for depicting the Saviour as a 'Jewish urchin'. Liebermann, a Jew himself, felt constrained to overpaint the figure of Jesus, making him fairer haired and more European-looking, in an attempt at appeasement in the anti-semitic atmosphere of the time. Painting in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany. From "Bibby's Annual 1914", edited by Joseph Bibby. [J. Bibby & Sons, London, 1914]
