After a Strike, 1895. The subject matter is related to Vicente Cutanda's "A Workers' Strike in Vizcaya". A dead worker lies on the floor of a factory, mourned by his wife and daughter, surrounded by machinery. Visible through a door on the right is a contingent of the Civil Guard. Among the critics, some judged the work committed to the emancipation of the worker and even to the cause of socialism, while others, conversely, saw in the painting "a vivid representation of the disastrous end to which certain subversive preachings lead; that worker lying lifeless in the factory gallery says more against socialism and anarchism than a dozen speeches." Undoubtedly, this was not Uría's intention, although he was by no means a promoter of socialist ideas; but he applied himself, like other painters of his generation, to representing the new social and labour reality as objectively as possible.
