Emanuel Hospital, Westminster, c1886. 'Emanuel Hospital, in James Street, Buckingham Gate, the most picturesque of the London almshouses, is also known as Lady Dacre's Almshouses, the Hospital having been founded by the will of Lady Dacre, in 1601. The Hospital is under the management of the Corporation of London. It is understood that a scheme in preparation for dealing with the Hospital, involves the destruction of the existing buildings.' Description by Alfred Marks. The almshouses which were rebuilt in the reign of Queen Anne were demolished in 1894. Replaced with St James' Court, Buckingham Gate, today Westminster City School occupies the land formerly belonging to the Hospital.
