British naturalist and evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and his family visited Freshwater in the summer of 1868. Mrs Cameron's kindness and hospitality were such that Darwin always retained a warm feeling of friendship for her. In her reminiscences, Anne Thackeray Ritchie describes how Mrs Cameron took the opportunity to photograph Darwin and how in a letter 'warmly approving' her picture, he added 'there are sixteen people in my house, and every one your friend.'
