Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, 1840. Franz Joseph of Habsburg-Lorraine was born at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna on August 18, 1830, the son of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and Sophie of Bavaria. He was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary and Bohemia, among other titles, from 1848 until his death. He married his cousin Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sissi, in Vienna on April 24, 1854. He died in the Austrian capital on November 21, 1916. This portrait depicts a young Franz Joseph wearing a velvet waistcoat.
