Alfonso XII of Spain, 1878. Portrait of Alfonso XII (1857-1885), King of Spain from 1875 to 1885. He wears the uniform of a Captain General, a dark blue frock coat with a crimson collar and cuffs. Gold embroidery adorns the collar and three rows of the same on the sleeve cuffs. He wears a double-braided gold cord shoulder board. A crimson silk sash with gold tassels and three gold clasps completes the outfit. Hanging from his neck on a red ribbon is the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and he displays the Grand Cross (sash and badge) of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand, of which he was Sovereign, and the Alfonso XII Medal of the Third Carlist War with two silver clasps on the ribbon. His right hand holds a hat adorned with white feathers and gold braid.
