St Briavel's Castle, Forest of Dean, c1955. Ceremony of cheese-rolling - play on castle walls. The St Briavels Bread and Cheese Dole (or Scramble) tradition is said to date back to the 12th century. Each year on Whit Sunday bread and cheese is thrown from the wall of the castle to local 'Dole Claimers' dressed in medieval costume. Audience watching from battlements. St Briavel's is a moated Norman castle in Gloucestershire, originally built between 1075 and 1129.
