Galileo Galilei, (1564-1642), Italian astronomer, mathematician and physicist, 1886. On 22 June 1633, Galileo was forced to abjure his doctrine before an inquisitorial tribunal, under the mandate of Pope Urban VIII. The trial was held at the Dominican convent of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. From "Historia Universal" by César Cantú, Vol VIII, published in Barcelona, 1886.
