Invasion of Herr's Island, (Pitssburgh) by water and ice floes from the Alleghany River, Pennsylvania, United States, February 2 and 3, 1883. A violent snowstorm developed into torrential rains, causing the ice mountains flanking the banks of the Alleghany River, extending eight miles to Pittsburgh, to break up.
