Coronation of Elizabeth II, Westminster Abbey, London, June 1953. View of the canopied entrance to the temporary annexe built outside the west entrance of Westminster Abbey for the coronation of Elizabeth II, featuring the Royal Arms. The coronation took place on 2nd June 1953. A glass-fronted annexe, designed by Eric Bedford, was built outside the west entrance of the Abbey. It was to be used as a space to organise the processions before the coronation service, and was colloquially known as the "arrival and robing suite". The annexe was kept open for four months following the coronation ceremony to allow the public to visit.
