Zambucco, 1855-1859. Portrait of Dimitrios Zambakos Pasha (1831-1913), Ottoman-born French dermatologist of Greek origin. Zambakos was one of the leading surgeons in the Ottoman Empire, and is considered by some to be 'the first leprologist of the Orient'. He served as private physician to the Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II, and to Abbas Hilmi Pasha, the last Khedive of Egypt. While leprosy was his main field of scientific interest, Dr Zambakos also produced numerous publications on a variety of medical subjects including leprosy, syphilis, morphinomania and eunuchs.
