Wells Cathedral from the moat, Somerset, c1955. Wells, consecrated in 1239, has been called "unquestionably one of the most beautiful" and "most poetic" of English cathedrals. Some consider it as Europe's first truly Gothic structure, breaking from the last constraints of the Romanesque style.
