Shakespeare Memorial, Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, c1955. The Shakespeare funerary monument is a waist-length portrait bust of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) flanked by black marble columns with acanthus leaf capitals. Shakespeare holds a pen, his other hand resting on a piece of paper. The bust has traditionally been identified as the work of the sculptor Gerard Johnson, but was more likely modelled from life by Gerard's brother, Nicholas Johnson. Its early placing during the lifetime of Shakespeare's widow and daughters indicates that it must be a faithful likeness. Holy Trinity is the church in which Shakespeare was baptised and where he was buried in the chancel two days after his death.
