The Funeral of Mr. Gladstone: the lying-in-state in Hawarden Church, 1898. Locals pay their respects to Gladstone's remains in St. Deiniol's Church. The body was then taken to the railway station for '...the last journey from Hawarden to London'. British Prime Minister William Eward Gladstone (born 1809) died on 19 May 1898, and was buried in Westminster Abbey on 26 May. His 'country seat' was at Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales.
