At a quarter to seven on the morning of Wednesday, May 25, Mr. Gladstone's body was removed to Hawarden Church, where it rested until six o'clock in the evening. The church was open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. At six o'clock a procession was formed to Broughton Station, which was reached about an hour and forty minutes later. On the way Mr. Gladstone's favourite hymns were sung. Four parties of bearers, divided as follows - colliers, estate-workmen, tenants, and neighbours, carried the coffin.'
