Virgin and Child Enthroned with Worshipping Angels and Prophets, c1420-1430. The Christ child holds a butterfly on a thread to symbolise the transformation from death to life. The metamorphosis of the butterfly is a symbol of the resurrection. Its life cycle - caterpillar (life), chrysalis (death/tomb), and butterfly (resurrection) - mirrors the Easter story.
