Saint Veronica, c1428-1430. One of the Flémalle Panels. Veronica was moved to pity on seeing Jesus carrying the cross to Calvary and gave him her veil so that he could wipe his forehead. Jesus accepted the veil, and when he returned it to her, the image of his face was miraculously captured on it. The resulting relic became known as Veronica's Veil. She is depicted here wearing a robe trimmed with gold, pearls and jewels, standing among lily of the valley, nettles and dandelions.
