The Frozen Thames: seagulls circling round Cleopatra's Needle, 1895. 'Thousands of gulls have been driven inland by hunger, and have provided a picturesque evidence of the extreme cold by their hovering round the London bridges. The birds have readily taken food from the hands of those who thoughtfully provided it for them. It has been a beautiful sight to see them, as in one of our Illustrations, circling round Cleopatra's Needle, and then resting on the barges and boats at the riverside'.
