The February 1893 flood in Brisbane was devastating and flooded areas of the town which had never been submerged before. Whole houses floated off their stumps and were swept down the river. Flood debris smashed against the Victoria Bridge which eventually was destroyed by the force. Eleven people drowned and 189 were admitted to hospital. A second flood deluged Brisbane several weeks later, although it didn't reach the heights of the earlier one.
