Portrait of Antoine-Adrien Lamourette (1742-1794), French priest and politician, 1876. During the French Revolution he accepted the law on the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (Constitution civile du clergé), voted by the Constituent Assembly on 12 July 1790, by which the French Catholic Church became a public service, without dependence on the authority of the Pope of Rome. Lamourette became the first constitutional bishop, being bishop of department Rhône-et-Loire (Lyon). From "History of the French Revolution", Vol I, 1876.
