Construction began in September 1872. It was inaugurated on 3 July 1878 by the Marquis of Comillas, Antonio López y López (1817-1883). The shipyard was designed by the Scottish engineers Bell and Miller. Drawing from life by R. Monleón. Engraving by Rico.
