Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, between 1500-1510. Saint Sebastian was an officer in the bodyguard of the Roman emperor Diocletian (245-313), who was sentenced to death by shooting by archers for secretly professing the Christian faith. Sebastian, still alive, was found by the Christian widow Irena and healed of his wounds. But after some time, he was sentenced to death again, and this time he was beaten with batons.
