The late Sir Charles Reed, M.P., Chairman of the London School Board, 1881. 'The death of this valued citizen and useful public man...has occasioned much regret, especially among those who feel an interest in different works for the social benefit of the population of London, so diligently served by his manifold personal labours. As Chairman of the London School Board,...and previously as Vice- Chairman, he has rendered most important services to the cause of popular education. Sir Charles has been an active member of the House of Commons in two Parliaments...; he was also a magistrate, and manager of the Ulster estates of the Corporation of London. As President of the Sunday School Union and one of the founders of the Congregational Board of Education and its Training College, he devoted his earnest attention to the furtherance of religious instruction. These and other public efforts, in which he showed a high degree of practical sagacity and sound judgment, as weII as unremitting industry, have left their mark, for good, on the state of affairs within the range of his influence, in this great metropolis, where the figure of Sir Charles Reed will certainly be missed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
