'The combined military demonstrations and diplomatic negotiations of the French Government in Tunis, pushed close up to the Bey's Palace of the Bardo, just outside the capital, have succeeded in procuring his assent to a French Protectorate, and to the French occupation of several important points on the seacoast and the frontier next to Algeria'.
