Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos is handed over for his custody in the monastery, 1801, (1851). During the reign of Charles IV of Spain, Manuel Godoy ordered the arrest of de Jovellanos (1744-1811) on 13 March 1801, and his banishment to Majorca in the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa, where he was under the care of the monks until 1802.
