Dusk, July 23, 1898. The painting depicts the nature of eventide when the brightness of the day gives way to the coming darkness. Open fields and meadows are enclosed on the right side of the composition by the dark wall of a forest, extending toward the horizon in a slight curve. The strip falling into the twilight of the dark-green forest is "cut" in the middle by the water's smooth surface; it contrasts with the dark-yellow of the field in the background. The static composition is animated by the sky with its rapidly forming clouds. Aleksandra Krypczyk-De Barra
