Impluvium, Samnite House, Herculaneum, Italy, 2nd century BC (2002). The oldest building in Herculaneum, featuring a pool under an opening in the roof to collect rainwater. The Roman town of Herculaneum was buried under a massive pyroclastic flow during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
