'...As I had no horses I determined to buy one but remembering my experience with a dog I resolved to have an experienced horse-dealer with me. Thanks to him I bought a very fine cart-horse. I fastened the horse to the garden roller and rolled up and down the lawn quite nicely as I thought. But after an hour when I found that I wasn't getting on I thought that there must be some quicker way of progressing. I therefore brought out my best walking-stick...[and] pushed violently against the roller...until a large crack caused me to shudder and a portion of the stick flew to a distance of 6 yards. I got thoroughly disgusted and ran away heedless of the horse who stood quietly browsing the grass. But as I was going I was suddenly called back by the clattering of hoofs, the rolling of the roller and the yelping of a dog. I turned back and saw my dear Lick being kicked unmercifully by the strong legs of my gallant carthorse. I rescued Lick finding that he had received no injury worth speaking of.
