'Sidmouth Bathing Place', Devon, 1797. The first of Jane Austen's family seaside trip, during the summer of 1801, seems to have been to Sidmouth, Devon. Austen used her memories of the family holidays when she wrote "Persuasion". Note bathing machines on the beach.
