King David playing the harp, and the Judgement of Solomon, c1260. Psalm 1; Beatus initial. David with his harp, and Solomon judging which of the two women is fit to be the mother of the baby both claim is theirs, as a swordsman prepares to cut the child in half. Seven medallions show: Creation of the Firmament; Creation of the Earth and Waters; Creation of the Trees; Creation of the Sun and Moon; Creation of Animals; Creation of Adam; Temptation of Adam and Eve with the Serpent. Other scenes show angels fighting, and men in combat astride lions and dragons. From the Rutland Psalter.
