The London, Tilbury, and Southend Railway - the Purfleet Station, 1856. 'The length of the railway is forty-two miles...The construction has been carried on under the joint superintendence of the well-known engineers, Mr. Bidder and Mr. John Fowler...The hamlet of Purfleet is on rising ground, and near the mouth of the Marditch stream, which here forms a little harbour...In the View is shown a portion of the railway, passing very near the river'.
