The Right Rev. Dr. M'Hale, Archbishop of Tuam, 1850. Portrait of Irish priest and nationalist John MacHale. 'While at [the college of] Maynooth, Dr. M'Hale contributed largely to the periodical literature of the day; and published a series of controversial letters under the name of "Hierophilos," which then excited much interest. His appointment to the Archbishopric of Tuam was in opposition to the wishes of a large and influential English party, who desired to see the double cross hang on a quieter and more passive bosom. Of Dr. M'Hale's political position and influence in Ireland, both amongst ecclesiastics and laity, little need be said; his acts, as well as his untiring aid to the late Mr. O'Connell being, doubtless, still fresh in the memory of the reader'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
