Algeria - passage of the Iron Gates, 1845. French colonialism in North Africa: '...an illustration of the Warfare in Algeria; with, glimpse of its Mountain Scenery; copied from a painting by a celebrated French artist...Various official despatches...clearly show that the subjection of the hostile tribes is not a very easy task...a despatch from Marshal Bugeaud...gives an account of his march in the mountains of the Matmatas, in search of the absconding tribes, and his endeavours to punish the mountaineers, who had taken part in the revolt...in several skirmishes...the Arabs offered a vigorous resistance. The French were, however, victorious in all these affairs...The Marshal concludes by saying that all the insurgents in the eastern portion of the province of Oran were struck with terror, and that he had reason to expect numerous submissions ere long'.
