The Bourse at Antwerp, 1844. The bourse of Antwerp in Belgium was the world's first purpose-built commodity exchange. It was designed in late Gothic style and built in 1531. 'This celebrated structure...was long reported to be the finest building of the kind in Europe: and served as a model for not only the Exchange in London, but also for that at Amsterdam'.
